Technological research and innovation have received substantial investments from both governments and private corporations in recent years. ‘‘Researchers discovered enormous reserves of cobalt, copper, tellurium, manganese, lithium, and other valuable resources that contribute to making technology better.’’ Without these investments, we won’t ‘‘enjoy the services of things like smartphones and better means of transportation.’’ Besides being willing to invest, there is a desire to explore, discover, and increase knowledge about our environment, as well as seek innovative solutions to improve life for everyone.

Are you aware believers can find a wide range of spiritual and material blessings within the vast content of the Bible as well? And did you know the instrument used to extract spiritual and material resources from the Bible is theology?

Let’s take a closer look at the process and stages of copper mining. First, there is the extraction and transportation of raw material for primary crushing. Next, the separation of oxide and sulfide ores takes place. Oxide ore undergoes leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning, while sulfide ore goes through flotation, thickening, smelting, and electrolysis. Then, we blend the refined ores to get a copper cathode that is 99.99% pure. To achieve the desired results, each stage requires the expertise of specialized engineers and equipment.

The Bible goes through a comparable process to uncover and share its hidden treasures with everyone. Engineers who research and explore its content are the believers. The tool they employ to explore the Bible is theology. Depending on their spiritual resource needs, they employ the relevant theology for extraction and refinement. That’s why believers can tap into incredible spiritual resources that aid in our transformation and Christlikeness.

While the mining instruments are important, they are not the primary concern. The main thing the copper miner desires and focuses more on is the copper itself. The primary purpose of the industry and machinery is to extract the copper. This also applies to the Bible and the theologies it inspires. Theology takes a backseat to the hidden gems in Scripture that believers uncover.

One reason that causes much confusion among believers is that many Christian groups don’t perceive their theology as a tool for exploiting Scripture to discover resources. Rather, they raise their theology to the status of Scripture. Some even replace Scripture with their theology. Copper mining instruments cannot substitute for copper ores. Likewise, once believers get caught up in comparing their beliefs and promoting their ideologies, they lose sight of the spiritual blessings within scripture.

Additionally, the machinery setup in the scattered mines across the globe can vary greatly, but the copper extraction process follows the same stages. If you alter the core process, you’ll get a substance other than copper. It’s now clear why there are disagreements among groups identifying as Christians regarding certain parts of the Bible. Not only do they give more importance to their mining equipment (theology), but they also cannot extract the pure, stainless, hidden treasures in those Scriptures because they use the incorrect tools. How can they come to discover this truth?

Why Do We Complicate Things?

I once listened to a sermon where the pastor preached for close to two hours. He discussed the divisions and conflicts within the Body of Christ. However, he dedicated the entire two-hour sermon to discussing the superiority of Calvinism over Arminianism, Catholicism, and other Christian belief systems. Another message involved a man of God handling female preachers. He was actually against women in leadership roles within the church. He took some time to justify why their denomination prohibits women from preaching the Word. So he vehemently criticized churches that encourage women preachers, labeling their beliefs as ‘‘doctrines of demons.’’

When I was younger, I thought Christian denominations were essentially the same in terms of beliefs, differing only in name. I recently examined denominationalism in the Body of Christ and discovered it to be false. Even more troubling is the fact that most Christian denominations openly express love and acceptance towards other denominations. However, their beliefs, which contain fundamental differences and contradictions, make it difficult for them to engage effectively in practical terms. It’s well known that Fundamentalists and Catholics can’t get along. Even among Baptist churches, different Baptist movements hold conflicting beliefs.

Have you ever questioned the reason behind the abundance of these Christian belief systems? Did you know the confusion we create in the Body of Christ discourages some unbelievers from exploring the Christian faith? One reason is that they develop their theologies independently from the Bible and attempt to reinterpret the Bible to align with their beliefs. What is the remedy? We should preach God’s Word and teach theology. A preacher proclaims God’s message for the moment to the audience. Whenever a preacher does his job, in reality, the Holy Spirit works through the person. So, the audience keeps quiet and listens to God’s message through the preacher. The Holy Spirit is God. There’s no room for argument with Him. We are not His advisers either.

We teach theology because we want to add to our existing understanding of what the Bible already says, not because of any additional revelations. Theology comes with discoveries that bring more light to the Scriptures. The Bible allows for theological endeavors, which is why theology exists. When theology lacks inspiration from the Holy Spirit, it becomes mere human speculation.

We preach what is authentic and teach what needs authentication to allow an evaluation through reason. The Bible’s content is authentic. That’s why we preach it. Theology is not always authentic, except the Holy Spirit inspires it. Additionally, theologies inspired by the Holy Spirit do not conflict with one another. The reason we teach a theology is to provide the opportunity to either reject or validate it.

What if your understanding of theology is flawed?

A group of Jehovah’s Witness evangelists paid me a visit in 2012. Despite my reluctance, they were determined to engage me in a biblical conversation about some aspects of the Christian faith. Our discussion primarily revolved around Jesus’ divinity. I wasted no time in affirming that Jesus is indeed God. They were firm in their belief that the Bible does not say so. One asked me the question Muslims and Atheists frequently ask Christians: “Can you show me where the Bible says Jesus is God?” At that time, I didn’t have sufficient knowledge to respond, but I knew that the Book of John provides ample evidence of Jesus’ divinity. Our argument went back and forth after I presented a couple of verses, eventually leading to a fatal disagreement before we parted ways.

One argument in that discussion caught my attention. According to them, the Bible identifies Jesus as the Son of God, but never directly refers to him as God. Their belief is that He is the Son of God, not God Himself. I presented John 10:30 to them, where Jesus declares, “I and my Father are one,” and the subsequent verses where the Pharisees attempted to stone Him for asserting equality with the Father. But they did not agree with it.

Most disagreements among Christians arise from varying theological approaches. Although theology is important for understanding the Bible, its role and purpose have often been misunderstood. The role of theology is to offer additional insight into biblical claims. Theology contributes to enhance our understanding of Scripture by providing extra pieces of evidence, not a new revelation. Those who haven’t grasped the role of theology prioritize their own man-made theological ideas over Scriptures. Their focus shifts to defending their school of thought rather than spreading the Gospel and accurately interpreting the Word of Truth.

Here are two significant roles of theology that emerged from my discussion with the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The Bible is a book that holds God’s Word and revelations for humans. Theology is the method by which we seek and reason about God, His Word, and His will for humankind, organizing information and gathering evidence to understand Him better. The content of the Bible is God’s Word, not theology. The Word of God in the Bible possesses the power to change lives, not theology. Theology only seeks to shed more light on biblical revelations by bringing in additional evidence and information. Furthermore, theology plays that role only when the Bible permits it.

Failing to grasp this will undoubtedly result in elevating your theology above the content of the Bible. That’s exactly what those Jehovah’s Witness evangelists were doing. Had they prioritized the Word of God, their theology would have thoroughly analyzed Bible verses that exalt Jesus to the status of God. From that exercise, they would have used reason to conclude that Jesus is indeed God.

Second, the role of theology is not to replace the Bible, but to complement it. The existence of genuine theology depends on the Bible’s content. The Bible’s content prompts genuine theological reflections and leads Christians into theological exploration. If theology exists independently of the Bible’s content, it lacks the Holy Spirit’s backing.

Most Christian groups claim their theological beliefs are based on the Bible, but that’s not true. Their theological frameworks originate from human thinking. What do I mean? Instead of starting with the Bible and moving towards theological reflections, they start with man-made doctrines and move towards the Bible.

How did the Jehovah’s Witness evangelists conclude Jesus is not God, despite evidence in the Bible and history suggesting otherwise? While they may argue they did a genuine biblical analysis, their beliefs are rooted in man-made doctrines promoted by the Watch Tower Society. It is contradictory to reject the outcome of a logical examination of Bible verses in their appropriate contexts that proves Jesus’ divinity and the reality of eternal punishment in hell, while still asserting the Bible as the basis for your theology. Hence, they revised and published their own Bible to align with their man-made convictions. 

When people misuse and prioritize theology over Scripture, that is the result. Those individuals often feel the need to defend the beliefs of their school of thought. Ultimately, each person follows their own path. As a result, various denominations and Christian movements emerged, each promoting conflicting theologies. This is a tactic Satan employs to sow confusion among believers and hinder the effectiveness of the Gospel.
